Have you ever tried to explain evolution and God to a 4 year old? Man oh man. I had a 30 minute conversation in the car with my son today about all of this. "who made people?" he asks me out of the blue.
I say "God made people...through evolution." This goes on for some time. "A looooong, long time ago, a little...creature was swimming in the ocean..." I go on about how it eventually walked out and eventually became a human and how God did this all from afar.
And
he says "I never see any little creatures make humans".
"It takes a long time, kiddo"
"Like a week?"
"No, like millions of years."
"I have to go pee"
"We're almost home"
"sometimes I don't like to go pee but sometimes I do."
"OK"
"Did God make power lines?"
"People make power lines...but God made people...so, sorta."
"I don't think that makes any sense"
"You and millions of others, Bucko."
He is so sharp that kid. The other day, he was scared to go to bed because of monsters. So I say "Baby, monsters aren't real - they don't exist."
to which he shoots back "Dinosaurs don't exist either but they are real."
I was like "Touche. But monsters never existed and are never real. I am scared of everything, right? I hate spiders and bugs but I am not scared of monsters. If they were real, I would be scared right?"
"Yeah, you are such a baby about stuff, mom. Goodnight!" and he runs upstairs.
